Some people fall into careers. Some are nudged. And then there’s people like me, who are claimed by a continent. It started at age 19, a heartbeat I found a rhythm in and one that I’ve been dancing to ever since.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that packing isn’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to an African adventure. What you’ll need for a Cape Town or Nairobi city break is very different from a golf trip along the Garden Route or a gorilla trek in Uganda. So, let me share my personal packing notes with you, drawn from experience, a few mistakes, and plenty of “I wish I had brought that” moments.

I’ve lived in South Africa most of my life, and even after 30 years of specializing in bespoke safaris and travel through Africa, I’m still amazed by the wild misconceptions people have about this continent.

Let’s be honest, when most of us think of plastic recycling, we imagine neat rows of colour-coded bins, trucks humming down clean suburban streets, or a blue logo stamped on a bottle. That’s not how it works in Zimbabwe - or most places in Africa.

Some stories start with a single moment. Others begin with a group of women, a pile of plastic, and a dream to make things better.
